What is the Single Incision (SILS) surgery ?

At Atlanta Bariatrics, almost 100% of our procedures are done laparoscopically. This involves making several small incisions instead of one large incision. This has undeniable benefits which include a shorter hospitalization, quicker recovery, less pain and scarring, and decreased complications.  Most all of the incisions utilized in laparoscopic surgery are only 5 – 12 mm in size (less than one-half an inch).

In certain patients, we can take this to the next level.  Instead of having one large incision (open surgery) or multiple small incisions (laparoscopic surgery), we do the procedure through just one small incision, often just at or above the belly-button.  The surgery is still done laparoscopically, we just place all the instruments through this single incision.  All the benefits of laparoscopic surgery are enjoyed with the added advantage of improved cosmesis.  There is very minimal scar.   Most people won’t even know you had surgery.

Not everyone is a candidate for single-incision surgery.  This procedure is most commonly done with the Lap Band procedure.  We can discuss whether you are a candidate at your initial consultation.
