Cranberries are a fruit that are grown on a vine-like plant. They are free of cholesterol, sodium and fat. Because they are rich in VItamin C, American voyagers and whalers brought cranberries on their excursions to prevent scurvy.

When shopping, choose cranberries that are firm and are dark red or yellow-red in color. Before cooking with cranberries, wash and remove their stems. The berries can be stored for up to 3-4 weeks in the fridge.

Ways to incorporate cranberries into your diet:

  • Top off your yogurt or oatmeal or cereal
  • Create a relish with cranberries, oranges and apples
  • Make fresh cranberry sauce
  • Mix dried cranberries with walnuts, cashews and dark chocolate chips for trail mix
