I had the RNY gastric bypass surgery. I was 330 pounds and a size 28 at my biggest, and more importantly, I was at risk of diabetes and struggled with a multitude of health issues. Since the surgery, I have lost over 200 pounds and have no underlying health complications as I did and have embraced healthy living. I’m now at a size 12 and I have not received any plastics so far. I wasn't concerned about getting older. My 65th birthday was coming up and I knew this was a major milestone and I was ready to celebrate. But what I WAS concerned about was turning 65 and weighing 265lbs. After much soul searching and research, and having the good fortune to have someone very close to me who has been through this surgery, I decided that while I couldn't stop the aging process, I COULD take control of my health. Like so many others, I had several comorbidities: pre-diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. So, I made my way to Atlanta Bariatrics and began the process to improve my health and the quality of my life.
I had gastric sleeve surgery on July 22, 2024 and I am now almost 4 months post op and my current weight is 220lbs totaling a weight loss of 45lbs - and I'm not done yet! I'm off of one of my blood pressure medications and will probably be off the other one soon. My cholesterol levels are now within normal range and my thyroid medication has been reduced. I turned 65 recently and I'm feeling the best I have in so many years and I don't mind at all looking in the mirror either. This surgery was my birthday gift to myself. I wasn't too old, it wasn't too late and life is good!

Having this surgery was probably the best decision I have ever made, I am still young and I realized I did not want to live with health issues. As an athletic teenager, I played every sport I could and was even voted "Most Athletic" during my senior year of high school. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that one day I would weigh 333 pounds.
As an overweight adult, the world can be harsh. People often look at you as if you're lazy or lack intelligence. That couldn’t have been further from the truth for me. I worked full-time outside the home, juggled family responsibilities, managed our household, and built a growing side business as a photographer. But my weight increasingly stood in the way.
I couldn’t run around and play ball with my kids. Even doing photography work became a physical challenge as my stamina diminished. I felt like I was letting my family down and became embarrassed by the person I had become.
After countless prayers and thorough research, I discovered Atlanta Bariatrics. Dr. Johnson and his incredible staff welcomed me with compassion and understanding. For the first time in a long time, I felt truly seen — without judgment.
Then came the big day: Surgery Day. It was a life-changing moment. Dr. Johnson and his team gave me the tools I needed to reclaim my life. And let me tell you—this was not the "easy way out." Surgery was just the beginning of a lifelong journey.

A lot has happened the past 6 months! I struggled with weight loss for a very long time. November 14,2024 I made one of the biggest and best decisions EVER and had VSG weightloss surgery. Dr.Johnson and team has held my hand through it all literally and still do right to this day! Since surgery I’ve lost 72 as of today. This TOOL(sleeve) has provided me a gateway to lose weight and keep it off! It’s definitely not the easy way out. It’s a challenge daily to just eat, getting enough protein, counting carbs, getting my caloric intake in and drinking NOTHING less than 64ozs a day. But, I will take those challenges any day vs being unhealthy and unhappy with my weight. I’ve gotten my life back and it feels truly amazing and such a blessing! Exercising is something I enjoy now at least 4-5 days a week. I couldn’t be more happy with my decision and this journey. I had gastric bypass surgery with Dr. Hart on 12/15/24 at 308lbs, and as of February 2025, I am 179lbs. It was the best decision for me and my health I could’ve made.
I, like many others on this journey, am chronically ill and had been overweight my whole life. I had tried all different kinds of diets to the point of being a detriment to myself. I never felt “bad” enough for weight loss surgery and never even considered it until someone close to me had gone through the process, and I saw how it changed their life. It gave me the encouragement I needed to make the change for myself and my health, and it was the best choice I could’ve made! The value of the results goes further than just how I look. I no longer have issues with acid reflux, I sleep better, my joints hurt less, and I finally feel like who I was meant to be. I feel lighter (no pun intended), I feel like I can move through life more gracefully, overall just existing feels easier.
I’ve heard others who are considering surgery say that it seems like there are so many restrictions, that they’re scared it would feel like they’re in a prison and won't be able to enjoy life or they'll miss out, but I say that this gave me my freedom, I am enjoying life more than ever before and I no longer feel like I have to hide myself. I no longer feel trapped by my ailments or my body, and I feel more capable than I ever have before. I won’t say that it isn’t difficult or a big adjustment, because it absolutely is. However, the entire team at Atlanta Bariatrics cares for their patients on a deep level, had my back every step of the way, and continue to support me long after surgery. I could not have made the changes I have without their continued support and I am extremely grateful to them for the work that they do, they are amazing people that want to help you succeed. I wouldn't have any other team along with me on this journey!

I am 6 months post-op and right at 85 pounds down. I haven't weighed this in over 40 years. I'm off of ALL cardiac, blood pressure and diabetes meds. My A1c is 5.4. I've been blessed that the journey has been a breeze...AFTER...I became honest with myself. Don't kid yourself into thinking "I can eat that cake or candy bar"...you'll quickly discover what you actually can and can't eat on your own. Stick with the meal planning and most if not all "side effects" WILL be minimal. I've never felt this good

I have struggled with my weight on and off for approx 13 years now. After having my son, I reached my heaviest weight of 334 lbs. Diet and exercise alone did not seem to help, I continued to gain weight. After meeting with Dr. Hart I decided gastric bypass was the best decision for me. Dr. Hart was very thorough, and put my mind at ease about the procedure. I now weigh 209lbs, with a total loss of 125lbs in a 1 year span. I feel great, and have more energy. I included a pic from my first trip in 2015 to Jamaica (on the left) at my heaviest weight approximately 290 pounds and one from this trip (on the right) at 180 lbs. Turning 50 was scary for me. I wasn’t so sure I’d make it as my mother and grandmother did not. I’ve struggled with my weight my entire adult life especially after having a total hysterectomy. I knew the only way I would make it to 50 was to take my health more seriously. Everything I had always done to lose weight was no longer working for me. When my insurance changed, and I learned gastric sleeve surgery would be covered. I made an appointment with Dr. Johnson immediately. It was the best decision I have ever made regarding my health. I am one year out and down 90 lbs from my day of surgery weight of 269, and 110 lbs down overall from my heaviest adult weight. My goal is another 10 however, if I don’t lose another pound, I am extremely happy with where I am.

I have been holding steady overall weight, but putting on more muscle mass. I will say my biggest regret is not doing this sooner. I have always been pretty active, never could see any significant weight loss that stayed long term. Thank you to Dr. Hart and his team for saving my life. When I began this journey, I was 305 pounds, and today I am down to 196.8 pounds. I have lost 109 pounds, and gone from size 26 to size 14, something I never imagined would be possible. There have been highs and lows, progress and setbacks, but through it all, the care and support I received from Dr. Hart and his staff gave me the strength to keep going.
One of the most powerful lessons I have learned is to take it one day, one meal, one bite at a time. And when I fall, because I have, I remind myself that I am capable of getting back up and getting back on track. That is what real change looks like.
