Why Probiotics Are Important After Bariatric Surgery

Probiotics are living microorganisms that are beneficial for your health. They are often referred to as “good bacteria”. The collection of these microorganisms is referred to as the gut microbiome. The genus, species and strain determine the exact health benefits.

Sources of probiotics: yogurt, fermented foods ex: kombucha, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut and supplements

Protect your microbiome:

  • Diet – Fiber feeds the good bacteria while sugar feeds bad bacteria and yeast. Alcohol can decrease the healthy bacteria in the digestive tract
  • Stress – The digestive tract is compromised by chronic and acute stress by decreasing gut motility, barrier function and mucosal blood flow
  • Exercise – Has been shown to increase the variety (more different strains) of bacteria in the gut
