While there are no foods that are forever banned after bariatric surgery, there are certain foods that should be minimized in terms of consuming on a daily basis, such as sweets, fried foods, processed meats, sugary packaged foods, refined carbohydrates, and alcohol. However, bariatric surgery should be thought of as a lifestyle change, not just avoiding certain foods for a short period of time. A less healthy food every so often will not derail your progress, however consuming foods daily that are high in saturated fat, sugar, and sodium can contribute to regained weight.

Consider this: are you an all or nothing type of person? You know yourself the best. If you find that if you have certain trigger foods in the house and they are hard to avoid knowing they are around, be smart about what items you purchase. If you are able to avoid daily consumption of the trigger foods, then it may be okay to have them around in limited quantities, especially if others living with you are not on your same eating plan.

Some patients experience dumping syndrome after eating sugary foods and high fat foods. Even if you do not experience dumping syndrome, it is still recommended to be mindful of intakes, not exceeding 5 grams of added sugar or saturated fat per serving.

In summary, a sweet here and there may not ruin your progress, however regularly incorporating high sugar foods in your diet may lead to an inability to lose and maintain weight.
